Glass shelf thickness depends on three factors: **span length, load weight, and support spacing**. Here's a general guide:

- **1/4" (6 mm)**: Shelves up to 24" span with light loads (decorative items, small books). Best as protective covers over wood surfaces.

- **5/16" (8 mm)**: Medium-duty shelves for standard display cases. Good balance of weight and capacity.

- **3/8" (10 mm)**: Heavy-duty shelves for retail displays, bookcases and barware. Works up to 36" spans with moderate loads.

- **1/2" (12 mm)**: Maximum load capacity for long spans (36"+). Used for aquarium stands, heavy merchandise and wide closet shelves.

Exposed shelf edges should be finished. Flat polish is the usual choice, because the edge shows and people handle it. Notches and bracket holes are cut before tempering.

**Need a recommendation?** Tell us the span, bracket spacing and what goes on the shelf and we'll recommend a thickness rather than guessing.
