Can You Cut Tempered Glass After Tempering?
No. Once glass is tempered, it cannot be cut, drilled, edged, or changed. Tempering puts the surface in compression. Cut it or drill it after that and it shatters into small fragments.
Every hole, notch, cutout, and edge finish has to be done before the glass goes in the furnace. We check edge distance on every drawing. A hole too close to the edge cannot be tempered safely. It has to move, or come off the drawing, before we cut.
If you need dimensions changed after tempering, there's no fix. The piece must be remade from annealed stock. This is why we confirm dimensions and hole locations before any tempering run.
Practical advice: Always provide a dimensioned drawing or template before we temper your glass. If you're unsure about final dimensions, order annealed glass first for fit-checking, then have it tempered once dimensions are confirmed.
